The List
Keep in mind that we are not looking at restoration projects. That is a different category; the list here is heavily focused on pristine examples. Loved and cared for, ideally original or somewhat close and sound service history.
Under $40,000
Porsche 986 Boxster 1997-2004
Personal bias aside, we believe the 986 is one of the best value sports cars, regardless of brand, you can purchase in 2024, particularly under $40,000. All three variants have their unique qualities.
Early 2.5 engine (97-2001)
2.7 facelift (2003-2004)
3.2 Boxster S (2000-2004)
Which is the best? All very good. Our preference is the 2.7 facelift. We love our Boxster’s. Mileage is not so important; condition and maintenance records are.
Most would be aware of the IMS issues in 986, 996 and early 997 models. The most reliable upgrade is the IMS Solution, available at https://imssolution.com/. It is a US-based company named LN Engineering. They initially produced what is called IMS Retrofit. A cheaper version, but not foolproof. Boxster Haus Julian has an IMS Solution on his 2004 Boxster (2.7) … peace of mind, 101! The issue, along with bore scoring, affected fewer than 10% of the models produced. If problems occur? An engine rebuild is expensive. IMS, if not done, consider doing it. Purchase the parts and have a specialist fit them, or if possible, do it yourself.
Thoughts: If you believe Boxsters are a poor man’s Porsche, take one for a drive. Fabulous cars, so much fun. Absolutely a genuine Porsche! The good ones, sublime handling and drivability.
Under $75,000
Porsche 996 Coupe 6 Speed manual 1998-2004
Except for the Mezger Turbo & GT variants, all other models have IMS (Intermediate Shaft) bearing and Bore scoring issues. Whilst the IMS issue affects under 8% of all 996s sold, one must check via maintenance records that the IMS has been replaced, ideally via LN Engineering IMS Solution (Noted under Boxster)
The sleeper of the range?
996 Porsche 1998 6 speed Base model (Coupe only)
It may come as a surprise to many, but historically, the base model Porsches have appreciated more than others. The iconic 1950s 356 Speedster, 1960s/1970s 911T, 1980s Carrera 3.2, and 1990s 964 & 993 models have performed very well, to put it mildly!
Headlights aside, the 996 lines in purist form are arguably the most elegant 911. Over time, the headlights have become quite cool.
Why 1998?
First water-cooled model, a highly desirable cable-operated throttle, free-revving 3.4L engine. Rare bore score issues and used twin row IMS bearings, the strongest of the 996 range (outside the Mezger-engined Turbo. Oddly, Porsche changed to a single row in 1999. The standard Carrera 2, ideally in Silver paint & Black leather interior (a very much a 911 signature combination at the time), is arguably the best. Surprisingly, the basic manual 996 C2 is a rare car. Pristine models are even rarer.
Note: The very reason we own one of these models—many miles & smiles!
Porsche 944 Turbo 5 Speed 1986-1991
A mighty car. Impressively built. Whilst the S2 could be added to the list, we believe the Turbo models will be the most sought after. Interestingly, S2 models are rarer. 25,245 Turbos were produced worldwide, compared to 14,071 S2S. Turbo S: only 1,635 were built.
Ideally, purchase with optional sports seats (Similar to 911 models); the standard seats offer little support and are frankly uncomfortable.
Under $100,00
The Porsche 997.1 911 is highly regarded by many for its engaging driving experience, which blends the classic character of the 911 with modern performance. Additionally, it is relatively more affordable compared to later models. Its notable strengths include hydraulic steering, a naturally aspirated engine, and a design that just works.
Undoubtedly becoming a little harder to find under $100,000, particularly a manual. Look hard enough and you can find them.
Under $150,000
996 Porsche Turbo 2000-2005 6 speed (Coupe only)
Our favourites are the earlier 996 Turbo models. Have a preference for traditional Porsche white-on-black instrument dials, commonly seen on the 2000 model and earlier. We are not keen on the black-on-white (grey) dials. For us, a distraction, not pure Porsche. Of course, others will disagree; that is perfectly fine!
As noted, the 996 arguably is one of the most elegantly formed water-cooled 911s—such beautiful lines. The rear is perfectly shaped. When observing a 996 & 997 side by side, you may agree.
Do believe the turbo can become blue-chip. 6-speed manuals command a premium over the auto.
Magnificent motor cars!
